The event for the Award for Best Reporting in Economics was held
The Association of Journalists of Kosovo (AGK), in partnership with JTI, organized today’s ceremony in which the submitted stories from the open call held between 19 and 30 November were evaluated. During this period, we received 22 applications. The jury for this edition consisted of: Agon Sinanaj, Mentor Buzhala, and Ardita Dushi.
The event opened with introductory remarks by the Chairperson of AGK’s Board, Xhemajl Rexha, who emphasized the importance of economic journalism and its role in increasing transparency and accountability in the country. He added that high-quality economic journalism not only informs the public but also contributes to strengthening democracy and building a sustainable society.
Following this, Ardita Dushi, Corporate Affairs & Communication Manager at JTI, addressed the audience, underlining the importance of the partnership with AGK and the support for stories that promote transparency and public accountability. She highlighted the work of economic journalists as essential allies of a functional economy.
In closing, jury representative Agon Sinanaj shared insights from the evaluation process, noting the high level of professionalism and quality demonstrated in this year’s submissions.
In this first edition, journalists competed with stories that showcased professional courage, investigative depth, and strong commitment to informing the public.
Today, during the event, we are pleased to announce the winners:
Winners of the Award for Best Reporting in Economics 2025
First Place – Alberta Hashani (Betimi për Drejtësi)
“Tenderi i dyshimtë i kamionëve, u kërkuan me urgjencë për t’u mbajtur në parking”
This story begins with a whistleblower report and uncovers a €400,000 tender for trucks that were, in practice, almost never used. The investigation reveals specifications tailored to fit only one company, multiple consecutive contracts awarded to the same operator, and clear contradictions with the Law on Public Procurement. Fuel records, equipment condition, and minimal usage deepen the suspicion of fraud and abuse of official duty.
First Place – Egzon Dahsyla (Kallxo.com)
“Kurdisja e tenderit: Audioincizime se si kryeshefi i KRU ‘Gjakova’ u përfshi në negociata për një tender të ndërmarrjes”
This investigation exposes the manipulation of a public tender at “KRU Gjakova,” documenting the direct involvement of the company’s chief executive in decisions outside his authority. Through audio recordings and official documents, the story shows how the tender was steered toward a company with family ties, while the actual work was carried out by a different firm. Following publication, the chief executive was suspended, police raids were conducted, and the case is now under investigation by the Special Prosecution for corruption.
The first-place award for both journalists was presented by Sazan Alija (Regional Director, JTI).
Second Place – Sanie Jusufi (Koha.net)
“Shumëfishimi i vlerës së subvencioneve nuk ul importet”
The article analyzes why increased agricultural subsidies have not resulted in higher domestic production and why imports remain high. Based on official data, audits, statistics, and interviews, the story argues that the lack of long-term planning, monitoring, and technical support is undermining the effectiveness of agricultural policy.
The second-place award was presented by Getoarbë Mulliqi (Executive Director, AGK).
Third Place – Arjeta Shabani (Reporteri.net)
“Kosova, nga ‘insider tip’ drejt destinacionit të ëndërruar”
This article brings attention to an underreported sector: mountain tourism. It highlights how hiking trails and guesthouses are generating local economic activity and attracting international tourists, especially along cross-border routes with Albania and Montenegro.
The third-place award was presented by Mentor Buzhala (jury member).
Congratulations to all the winners, and thank you to all applicants for their important work!
