AJK expresses it’s concerns over the election process of the new IMC Chairperson

The Association of Journalists of Kosovo (AJK) is deeply concerned about today’s meeting of the Independent Media Commission (IMC), during which a new chairperson was elected just days before the current chairperson, Jeton Mehmeti, is set to complete his mandate.

The election of Besnik Berisha as the new chairperson raises serious legal questions regarding amendments to the IMC Regulation, which clearly state that a new chairperson should be elected at the first meeting following either the expiration of the current chairperson's mandate or their dismissal.

AJK considers today’s vote a blatant attempt to politicize and instrumentalize the IMC to serve the interests of the ruling party, as evidenced by public statements made by the initiators of these changes.

As a constitutional body, the Independent Media Commission plays a vital role in regulating Kosovo's media landscape. It must safeguard its full independence and resist any form of political interference.
